Melba Quick

Melba Quick was born in Smackover Arkansas in 1928.  Her parents, L.H. and Dora Coffman, owned a general store near the Arkansas, East Texas, and Louisiana state lines during the twenties oil field boom days; prior to moving to Albuquerque New Mexico in 1936.

In the early 60's, Melba enjoyed drawing elongated and elegant women as characters and creating her own style of fashions. After raising her four children in rural areas in Northern New Mexico and Albuquerque, Melba began painting and sculpting some of the characters and memories she experienced.

Melba has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions; including the blue ribbon at the New Mexico State Fair Fine Arts for sculpture, and at the American Women's Artist Second Annual Competition in 1999 for painting. Melba's folk art painting "Granny Series" has been chosen more than twelve times as covers for the "Country Register" national publication.

Remarkably, Melba was able to create her characters out of her head and compose most paintings in one day. She was so much fun to watch and listen to and she will forever live in our hearts and her paintings.
